Great work coming from Daniel Shea on his series "Plume", and in his words:

"Plume is a photographic exploration of Southeast Ohio and its unusually dense concentration of coal-fired power plants. The project serves as a follow-up to the work I made in 2007 in Appalachia, Removing Mountains, which focused on mountaintop removal, a particularly pervasive form of coal mining. Plume tracks this coal up river to Ohio, where it is being burned to generate electricity. Geographically rooted in two towns along the Ohio River, the project focuses on Racine and Cheshire, who sit in close proximity to 4 power plant stations, all within a 15-mile radius."

7. Be ready to talk money when somebody calls with a job

Know what you charge for a day’s work. Do not say “Yes” without talking price. If you don’t know market rates in your city, ask others. Know what you normally charge, but don’t be afraid to ask the photographer what his or her budget is. The same photographer may some have jobs with an editorial budget (lower) and others with an advertising budget (higher).

1. Always be on time. In fact, always show up early.

Make a photographer late for a shoot, and she will call someone else the next time.

3. Have a 30-second elevator speech in your brain

When you meet people – possibly in an actual elevator, but more likely in a networking situation – you will need to explain who you are and what you do in 30 seconds or less. Prepare a short speech for any situation. An example: “Hi, I’m Jane Doe. I’m a recent graduate of the Acme School of Art and I work as a photo assistant. In fact, I just flew to St. Louis and assisted a photographer for People Magazine who was photographing nuns in a convent. Did you know that nuns play soccer?”
Practice your short speech with your roommate so that when you run into an important person that you’ve been dying to meet at a film screening, you don’t mumble and sound like a sophomore on a first date.

Mr. Morrison received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Oklahoma in 1995. As a photojournalist, Graham has worked with a variety of domestic and international news organizations, including: The New York Times, The International Herald Tribune, Getty Images, Bloomberg News, U.S. News and World Report, Paris Match, Der Spiegel and Zurich’s Sonntags Zeitung. Mr. Morrison has covered a wide range of international news stories, including: The 2003 Iraq invasion, the conflict in Israel, the aftermath of the 2005 Tsunami in Thailand, polio in India, mental health and political tensions in Kashmir as well as travel features throughout Europe. Mr. Morrison will talk about his own career as a Photo Journalist along with the present and future status of Photo Journalism.

Sean Berry was awarded both Bronze and Gold at the recent Art Directors Club of Houston Competition this past month. Not only with this, he recently found out that he was also accepted into the PDN Magazine for PDN's Ultimate Music Moment Contest!

Nick Minton was accepted into the Art Directors Club of Houston Competition this past month as well. Before that, he had a piece chosen for PDN's Digital Pix Imaging Contest for New Talent and was also recently accepted into Issue #49 of CMYK magazine!

The deadline is later than usual this year on December 30, 2010. Judging will take place in January. You can see all the rules, download entry and fees forms and read about our 2011 judges on the PIEA web site http://pieapma.org. Click on the Photo Competitions link on the left.

Did you ever think that you'd see a CMOS sensor measuring 202 x 205 mm? That's 7.95 x 8.07 inches to our fine imperial friends. Its impressive size -- about 40 times larger than Canon's largest commercial CMOS sensor -- translates to staggering light-gathering capabilities, capturing images in one one-hundredth the amount of light required by a professional DSLR. Better yet, the sensor is matched by new circuitry allowing for video capture at 60fps in just 0.3 lux of illumination (think full moon on a clear night). Unfortunately, the press release is more concerned with promoting Canon's engineering prowess than with product launch. Nevertheless, we're impressed

Canon succeeds in developing world's largest CMOS image sensor, with ultra-high sensitivity

TOKYO, August 31, 2010-Canon Inc. announced today that it has successfully developed the world's largest*1 CMOS image sensor, with a chip size measuring 202 x 205 mm. Because its expanded size enables greater light-gathering capability, the sensor is capable of capturing images in one one-hundredth the amount of light required by a professional-model digital SLR camera.

At 202 x 205 mm, the newly developed CMOS sensor is among the largest chips that can be produced from a 12-inch (300 mm) wafer, and is approximately 40 times the size of Canon's largest commercial CMOS sensor.*2

In the past, enlarging the size of the sensor resulted in an increase in the amount of time required between the receiving and transmission of data signals, which posed a challenge to achieving high-speed readout. Canon, however, solved this problem through an innovative circuit design, making possible the realization of a massive video-compatible CMOS sensor. Because the increased size of the new CMOS sensor allows more light to be gathered, it enables shooting in low-light environments. The sensor makes possible the image capture in one one-hundredth the amount of light required by a 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor, facilitating the shooting of 60 frame-per-second video with a mere 0.3 lux of illumination.

Potential applications for the new high-sensitivity CMOS sensor include the video recording of stars in the night sky and nocturnal animal behavior.

Through the further development of distinctive CMOS image sensors, Canon will break new ground in the world of new image expression, in the area of still images as well as video.

3 Online registration will be open starting tomorrow.  Fees are reasonable, as usual.  We would like for people to use the online registration if at all possible.  Dealing with checks and cash is much harder to track, though we will accommodate you with a printable form if necessary.  Pre-registration deadline is Sept. 17th.  Save yourself some dough, and us some last minute work with your early registration!  The price goes up after Sept. 17th!  Details will be on www.spesouthcentral.org   starting on Wednesday.
