"In the West," a play about Texas and Texans, will open on Thursday, Oct. 4, at Texas A&M University-Commerce.

Directing the production -- a collection of 18 monologues about "your neighbors, people at church, and people on the street you wonder about" -- is Dr. Carrie Klypchak, theatre faculty member.

Inspired by the 1985 Fort Worth exhibition of gritty, realistic collection of photographs by Richard Avedon, "In the West" will be presented at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 4-6, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, in the Studio Theatre of the Performing Arts Center.

The second week of shows will be at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 11-13, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14.

Seating is limited to 70 people per show and those wishing to make reservations in advance are urged to call the University Playhouse Box Office at 903-886-5900. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens, and $3 for students. Group rates for 10 or more will be $1 off.

The monologues in the play range from funny to heart wrenching, Klypchak said. "I've seen this show performed and audiences identify with these people in Texas so much."

The student cast, including several newcomers to the Playhouse, is enjoying working on the characters. "The actors are having a ball and really identify with these characters as people they know," she said.

There will be live music during the shows by singer and songwriter Lou Ann Petty and her band, who will play a mix of original and classic western songs during the performance.

All of the profits from the performances will be donated to the Children's Medical Center of Dallas, Klypchak said. She noted that this is part of the agreement with authors of play that a portion of the proceeds be donated to charity.

Collaborating with the production will be Vaughn Wascovich, photography instructor in the A&M-Commerce Department of Art, who with his students, will photograph the cast in a style inspired by Avedon's work. The photos will be displayed in the Performing Arts Center.

"In the West" was created in a workshop and conceived by Jim Fritzler, conducted by Janelle Buchanan and Sidney Brammer.

The play was written by Sidney Brammer, Janelle Buchanan, Joy Cunningham, Jeff Ellinger, Gene Fowler, Jim Fritzler, Amparo Garcia, Doris Hargrave, John Hawkes, Aralyn Hughes, Carmen Luna Labbe, Bill Leissner, Lorne Loganbill, Tim Mateer, C.K.
